What Is a Hydraulic Hose Crimper and How Does It Work?

Your company has a piece of equipment down and needs a new hydraulic hose, but you don’t have the manpower or the time to wait in line at the local shop.

Have you considered buying a hydraulic hose crimper to save time and money for your business?

Do you know what a hydraulic hose crimper is and how it works?

We explain the need-to-know answers along with top product recommendations here.

Hydraulic Hose Crimpers

What is a hydraulic hose crimper?

A hydraulic hose crimper is a machine that allows the user to install end fittings to the hydraulic hose.

Hose crimpers come in either portable or bench-mounted models.

If the crimper is portable, it will likely use a hand pump or air power to crimp the fittings to the hose. If the crimper is bench-mounted it will use an electric or air-powered pump.

Benefits of a Hydraulic Hose Crimper

Having a hydraulic hose crimper in your facility can be beneficial, especially if you have a high throughput of hydraulic hose needs.

Like most parts, hydraulic hoses eventually start to wear and if they are not properly attended to, they will fail. This results in equipment that is unusable and limits production.

Wouldn’t you rather depend on an in-house maintenance team to assemble a new section of hydraulic hose than outsource the work?

Having a hose crimper in-house allows you to forgo outsourcing your hydraulic hose assembly needs. No more waiting around for a contractor to finish the job or paying extra for a rush job.

Keeping your hydraulic hose assembly in-house will save you time and money by allowing for less downtime and quicker repair time.

How Does a Hydraulic Hose Crimper Work?

So, how does a hydraulic hose crimper work?

A hose crimper uses a pump to fasten the end fitting to the hydraulic hose. Making a secure and even fit allows fluid to flow without leaks. Fewer leaking hoses result in less equipment downtime and more productivity for your company.

Depending on the type of crimper you are using, the crimping will be done manually by a hand pump or automatically by a powered pump.

Portable models of house crimpers may use a hand pump but can also use an air compressor for power. Bench-mounted models will use an air compressor or electricity for power.

Which Style of Hose Crimper Do I Want?

Deciding on which style of hose crimper you want will depend on your specific application.

Some factors to consider when buying a hydraulic hose crimper are:

  • Size of the hose
  • Type of hose (4 wire or 6 wire)
  • The type of controls you prefer (automatic or handheld)
  • The durability and longevity of the equipment
  • How often are you going to use the crimper
  • Ease of use

If you have a large output of hydraulic hose to add end fittings to, you likely would opt for a bench-mounted crimper.

Bench mounted hydraulic hose crimpers will be powered by an air compressor or by an electric connection. Bench mounted crimpers allow for a higher throughput of hydraulic hose production and are applicable where hydraulic hose production is a daily occurrence.

Portable hose crimpers are lighter weight and able to be transported to the job site if necessary. Portable hose crimpers are powered either by a hand pump or by an air compressor. If your repair is off-site and you want to save time, a portable crimper may be the best option.

Popular Models of Hose Crimpers

Regardless of the type of crimper you have chosen, Parker offers the product to meet your needs.

For your portable crimper needs, Parker offers the Karrykrimp hose crimper and the Karrykrimp II hose crimper.

The great feature of the Karrykrimp models from Parker is that they are both module units. This means both can be used either as a portable unit or a bench-mounted unit.

In deciding which Kerrykrimp model to purchase it is important to note some differences in technical specifications and capabilities.

The Karrykrimp offers a pressure rating of up to 10,000 PSI maximum and can crimp straight or bent stem steel fittings from 5/8″ to 1 1/4″ in diameter depending on if it is the portable system or the bench mount system.

The Karrykrimp II also offers a pressure rating of up to 10,000 PSI maximum and can crimp straight or bent steel fittings up to 1 1/4″ in diameter.

If you are opting for a bench-mounted unit, Parker offers the Parkrimp 2 hose crimper. This model is available in two different power phase options, both 3 phase 230/460 volt and single-phase 230 volts.

The Parkrimp 2 offers a pressure rating of up to 5,000 PSI maximum and 125-ton force and can crimp straight or bent stem steel and stainless steel fittings from 1/4″ to 2″ in diameter.

Some features common to both the portable and bench-mounted models of the hydraulic hose crimper from Parker are:

  • A compact, rugged, and durable design
  • An efficient bottom-loading design (great for long hose assemblies)
  • Color-coded dies by size for easy identification and reduced setup time
  • Linked dies that prevent segments from being misplaced or mismatched

Act Now and Save Money

Hydraulic hose crimpers can be an invaluable tool for the maintenance department of your company.

Purchasing a hydraulic hose crimper for your business will save you money in the long run by cutting back on downtime and shortening the repair time of your equipment.

Whether you want to enjoy the versatility of a portable hose crimper or opt for the stationary bench-mounted hose crimper, there are models available to suit your needs.
