As the temperature starts to drop and food gets scarce, rats must look for a way to stay warm and survive the cold months. But, it’s surprising to see rats in huge numbers come springtime. How do they survive the winter? If you suspect a rat infestation is ongoing in your home, you should contact an expert in Austin pest control as soon as possible. Read on to know what rats do to survive the freezing temperatures:

They Store Food

Even if rats cannot fatten themselves up for the winter, they can prepare themselves in other ways. They start collecting more food in the fall and late summer. They look for extra food instead of eating when there is an opportunity to do so. These rodents can eat anything, including garbage, so they won’t run out of options. In general, they drag their findings back to an area they can easily access and leave it there for later. Rats tend to maintain their stockpile throughout the winter. They usually store bird seeds, pet food, compost waste, nuts, and fabric.

They Dig a Burrow or Stay in a Man-Made Shelter

To stay warm, rats search for a structure like a rock, fence, or wall and dig a burrow beneath or against it. You will know you have a rat infestation if you find small rat homes against air conditioning boxes and electrical units. But, they will only burrow when they need to since their priority is to search for food or preferable shelter. In fact, many of them prefer to use your home for shelter instead of burrowing.

They Build their Nests

Rats drag anything they can find to a secluded place and bunch it all together. Rats tend to be choosier with where they build their nest than what material they should use for building it. They seek out warm, dark places so they will not be bothered by humans or other predators.

Rats can survive winter well; however, they usually need to exploit human resources to do so. Because of this, rat infestations can be a serious pest control issue for homeowners during the coldest months of the year. To keep rats out of your house, find any potential entries and practice good organization and cleaning habits. By making your home inaccessible and unattractive, rats will not trouble you in winter. But, to effectively eliminate a rate infestation in the winter, you must seek help from a professional pest control company. Rats may get in regardless of your pest control efforts. But, experts are just out there to help you deal with your issue.
