Pricing Strategies for Businesses Facing Inflation

Inflation can affect a business from several directions. Suppliers may increase prices, employees may require higher wages, energy costs may change and customers may become more cautious about spending.

The challenge is to protect the financial health of the business without making customers feel that prices are changing without justification. A well-planned pricing strategy combines accurate cost information with a clear understanding of customer value.

Calculate the effect on each offer

Inflation does not affect every product or service equally. Some materials may rise sharply while other costs remain stable. Labour-intensive services may face different pressures from products dependent on imported components.

Review the direct and indirect costs connected to each offer. Calculate how the change affects contribution margin and identify which services are most exposed.

Avoid relying on an average inflation figure when the actual cost structure is more specific.

Review customer price sensitivity

Customers respond differently depending on the importance of the product, available alternatives and the size of the price change.

Segment customers and products according to:

  • Frequency of purchase
  • Business importance
  • Available alternatives
  • Customer budget
  • Switching difficulty
  • Service differentiation

A targeted adjustment may be more appropriate than a uniform increase across the full range.

Protect value communication

Customers need to understand what they receive in exchange for the price. Value may include reliability, specialist knowledge, speed, convenience, quality assurance or reduced risk.

Improve product and service explanations before changing prices. When customers understand the outcome, they are less likely to compare the business using price alone.

Use packages and options

Packages can help customers manage budgets while allowing the business to protect margins. An essential option can cover core requirements, while higher tiers include more service or convenience.

The differences should be easy to understand. Avoid removing important value without explaining the change.

Review discounting

Inflation can encourage businesses to use discounts to protect sales. However, frequent discounting may weaken margins and teach customers to delay purchases.

Review whether each promotion creates new demand or simply reduces the price paid by customers who would have purchased anyway. Consider added service, longer commitments or carefully limited incentives as alternatives.

Use clear contract terms

For recurring or long-term work, contracts should explain how prices may be reviewed. A transparent adjustment mechanism is often more predictable than a sudden renegotiation.

Explain the timing, basis and notice period for any change. Customers should know what happens if costs increase substantially or the scope of work changes.

Communicate price changes respectfully

A price message should state what is changing, when it will happen and what the customer can expect. Avoid blaming customers or using vague language.

The explanation should be factual and concise. Customers may appreciate knowing that the business has reviewed costs, improved efficiency and delayed increases where possible.

Reduce costs without reducing quality

Pricing is only one part of protecting margins. Review purchasing, scheduling, waste, rework, energy use, software and payment fees.

Cost reduction should not create hidden problems. Cutting service quality may increase complaints and customer loss, which can be more expensive than the original cost increase.

Use scenarios and regular reviews

Create base, downside and improvement scenarios. Consider lower demand, additional supplier increases, delayed payments and changes in customer behaviour.

Review pricing regularly instead of waiting until margins become unsustainable. Smaller, well-explained changes may be easier for customers and teams to manage.

Measure the effect

Track revenue, volume, contribution margin, customer retention, complaints, refunds and average order value after a price change.

If margin improves but customer retention falls sharply, investigate whether the offer, communication or service level needs adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Should prices rise by the same percentage as costs?

Not necessarily. Pricing should reflect cost impact, customer value, competition and required margin.

How much notice should customers receive?

Provide reasonable notice based on the relationship, contract and nature of the service.

Are smaller price increases better?

Smaller changes can be easier to absorb, but frequent increases may frustrate customers. The approach should be clear and predictable.

Should businesses publish their costs?

Businesses do not need to disclose every internal cost, but they should communicate price changes honestly.

What if customers cannot afford the new price?

Consider alternative packages, payment timing or reduced scope without compromising the sustainability of the business.
