Even though parrots can eat a wide range of human foods, not all of them are good for these birds to eat. Some things that people can eat without any problems are not safe for birds. That is why if you are getting a parrot soon, then one of the things that you need to learn is their diet. Let this guide walk you through which foods are good for your parrot to eat.

Different Types of Seeds

Avoid letting your parrot only eat seeds. This though can be as much as a quarter of its daily food intake. And the other one-fourth should be made up of pellets. There are different types of seeds that you can feed your parrot. Here are the safest for them to eat:

  • Buckwheat Seeds
  • Canary Seeds
  • Millets Seeds
  • Oats Seeds
  • Safflower Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds

The most common in pet stores are the sunflower seeds. However, give parrots this in moderation because they are high in fat.

Nuts

This is by far the favorite food of parrots and other types of birds. You can easily find them in pet stores too. And when you look at your options, there are also different types of nuts that you can find at pet stores too.

  • Almonds
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Cashews
  • Hazelnuts
  • Pecans
  • Pistachios
  • Shelled peanuts
  • Walnuts

Grains and Legumes

You can also feed parrots cooked grains and legumes. Although parrots can eat both raw and cooked grains, other parts of their diet can be drying, like the pellets and other seeds. And cooking will make sure that they are still getting the much-needed moisture in the diet as they can. Here are the grains that you can cook in advance for them:

  • Brown Rice
  • Barley
  • Quinoa
  • Green Beans
  • Black Beans
  • Lentils
  • Peas
  • Chickpeas

Fruits

As part of their healthy diet, it is very important that you also add fruits to their meals. But as much as you can, give your parrot organic fruit. Make sure to wash it well before giving it to your pets. There are different fruits available at home that you can also give to your parrots.

  • Apples
  • Mangoes
  • Peaches

These are all good examples of fruits that are good for you as well as the parrots. However, remember that you should never give avocados to birds. This is because it is believed that avocados contain something that is poisonous to them.
