You read that right. Your mattress can affect your sleep quality and health. If you constantly sleep on a poorly kept mattress, you may feel exhausted all the time or develop skin rashes and diseases. That’s why it’s important that you know how to maintain it. This guide will help you out.

How to Maintain Your Mattress

It’s no secret that mattresses are quite expensive, which is why you want to make sure you get the most out of them. After all, it is an investment, and it’s up to you to take care of it and ensure it lasts for years. That being said, here are some tips for maintaining your mattress.

Wash Linens Regularly

Every time you sleep, your body secrets all sorts of fluids, and these will stay on your bedsheet for a long time. If this goes on for quite some time, the dirt will inevitably seep into your mattress. Wash your linens at least once every two weeks to keep your bed in its best possible state.

Do Not Let Your Pets Play on Your Mattress

If you have pets at home, make it a point to train them not to play on your mattress. Dogs or cats have sharp claws, and they might accidentally scratch your beddings whenever they become a little playful. If you want to play with them, prepare a separate bed for them or do it outside your bedroom to keep your mattress safe.

No Jumping

Since we were kids, we’ve always been told not to jump on our beds, and it’s all for good reasons. Aside from keeping you safe, not jumping on the bed will help prolong your mattress’s lifespan. This is especially true for mattresses that use water, air, or spring as the primary source of support.

Take a Bath Before Going to Bed

One of the easiest maintenance tips you can follow is a simple one. When we spend the whole day outside, we bring home with us lots of allergens and bacteria. These will reside on your mattress if you don’t take a shower to get rid of them first. Make sure your body is clean before you sleep, and don’t place your luggage and other items on top of your bed.

Signs You Need a New Mattress

While maintenance would absolutely help prolong your mattress’s lifespan, there will come a time when you will need to replace it. Of course, you also don’t want to throw it away too early, so how do you know it’s the right time? Pay attention to these signs to determine whether or not you need a new mattress.

Age of Your Mattress

Whenever you purchase a new mattress, use a marker to write the date of purchase on the label. This will help you determine how long you’ve had the mattress. Mattresses often last up to 10 years with proper maintenance. However, if you don’t take care of it properly, it can only last for seven years. Knowing your mattress’s age will give you an idea of when you might need to replace it.

You’re Often Restless

Sleeping at night is an opportunity for your body to recharge and refresh, which means that if you feel restless when you wake up, there might be some problems with your sleep. One of the most common reasons for feeling restless is that you often twist and turn in your sleep, trying to find a comfortable spot. This usually happens when your mattress can’t provide the right support and comfort for your body.

However, if you still feel exhausted all the time, even when you’ve already changed your mattress, and you know you did all the things you could to get adequate rest, you may want to consult a medical professional for possible treatments for chronic fatigue syndrome.

Sagging

One of the most visible signs your mattress is ready to retire is when you see sagging on different spots on the bed. This occurs when the spring or the material that provides support to your body has lost its resiliency. Because of this, it’s harder for the mattress to return to its original shape. And as such, you end up with sagging spots. If you see these impressions are more than an inch deep, or if you feel like your body is sinking or hammocking into the mattress, you definitely need a new one.

A good night’s sleep is our chance to refresh our mind and body to prepare us for the following day. However, if your mattress can’t provide that, you can expect that you will perform rather poorly in all the tasks you may have for the day. Make sure that you know how to keep your mattress healthy.
