Losing weight is not easy. Regardless of your goal – whether it’s just a few pounds to fit into your wedding dress or more to get healthier – weight loss is not a simple endeavor. It involves doing the proper research, discipline and willpower, and the commitment to change your bad habits altogether. In some cases, luck is also involved since some people seem to have a faster metabolism than others.

But just because it involves some serious mental and physical tweaking doesn’t mean losing weight can’t be fun! There are plenty of activities that we do daily or occasionally that would also contribute to our weight loss journey. Adding these activities to a plan recommended by your doctor and experts at a weight management center would go a long way to achieving your weight loss goals.

  • Playing with Your Pet

Ever feel winded after roughhousing with your dog? Do your arms ever get tired from playing laser tag with your cat? Guess what. You’ve already been torching calories then! These activities don’t seem like exercise to your brain, but your body treats it as such. Studies have shown that owning a dog is a major factor in how driven people get about exercising and weight loss.

  • Make your workplace your “gym.”

It’s common knowledge that sitting too long at your desk, in front of a computer all day long is detrimental to your health. Most workplaces recommend that you take frequent brakes to reduce stress and fatigue. Why not take it one step further and use your office like a gym?

  • Need something from a co-worker? Stand up and walk to talk to them instead of shooting them a message or writing an email.
  • Surprisingly, studies have shown that the little movements you make either because of habit or to stave off anxiety can help you burn up to 350 calories a day.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Up the ante by taking two steps at a time.
  • Don’t forget to take stretch breaks every 30 to 45 minutes to prevent stiffness and promote flexibility.
  • Park your car farther away from the building entrance, so you take extra steps and burn more calories as a result.
  • Tackle those household chores.

Counting calories in the kitchen will greatly affect your weight loss goals, but did you know that deep cleaning your kitchen also has a profound effect? Working up a sweat while taking on projects like these could help you easily burn up to 200 calories in a day. Even the simple act of rearranging furniture is akin to spending a few minutes lifting weights at the gym.

  • Work on your landscaping.

Most experts recommend gardening as a way to relieve stress and anxiety. The good news is that it’s also great for your physical health. Mowing the lawn means having to walk back and forth across your yard while pushing a 90 to a 100-pound lawn mower. A bodybuilder would call it sled pushes; you’re simply doing lawn maintenance.

Planting new plants, flowers, and vegetables requires plenty of arm strength. You would also be doing constant squats and kneeling. Not to mention the bending over and lunging. When taken all together, these little movements could help you burn more than a hundred calories in less than an hour.

  • Play with your kids.

Children are generally active, and if they’re not, it’s best to encourage this behavior while they are young. As the adult trying to lose weight, you understand the importance of healthy activity and nutrition. Instill these values in your kids by engaging them in fun ways that get them (and you) moving.

You can start small by taking them with you when you walk your dog. You can even teach them about the responsibilities of pet parenting as a bonus. If you’re a family of gamers, invest in games that promote activity instead of sedentary gameplay. Play as a family, and you not only promote fitness but you also create lasting memories for your kids.

  • Get into yoga and meditation.

Sometimes, physical activities for weight loss don’t have to be of the rigorous kind. Yoga and meditation promote mindfulness and taking the time to understand your goals fully. We all need to pause and assess how our plans and goals are progressing. Yoga is the perfect tool for that. While it’s true that yoga poses will burn fewer calories, it’s positive effects for your mental and physical health are just as effective in helping you lose weight.

  • Get up and dance.

Not necessarily considered exercise, but possibly one of the most fun activities to do. It’s also the simplest one. Put on your favorite pop tune and shimmy and shake away! Music affects our mood greatly, and dancing to a boppy tune is a known mood booster when you’re feeling down or upset. You can also start dance classes or if you want to get your whole family involved? Try one of those TikTok dance challenges and have fun watching your video go viral.
