Teaching Children Responsibility: Strategies that Can Work

Children won’t stay young forever, and you need to teach them values and skills that will benefit them in the long run. Being responsible is one of those things, and teaching it to your children should be one of your goals as a parent. It is a good thing that teaching it can be done in several ways. Here are some potential options that you may have in teaching lessons of responsibility.

Get A Pet

One of the simplest ways you can teach your child responsibility is to have a pet. Not all pets are equal in this particular job. Dogs are a favorite since, with some dog training, they can be very great companions to your child. While you might have the lion’s share of the work in pet care, having them help out can be a good thing. It is even better if your children are the ones who request a pet. This gives you good reason to give them tasks like feeding or bathing the pet. Having a pet depend on your child can give them an idea about the importance of responsibility and why they should have it.

Give Them Allowance

Besides having a pet, another great way to teach responsibility is to give them an allowance. A limited amount of money gives them the idea of the value of money and how they should be using it. There are several ways to make an allowance work for your child while giving them lessons about it. For example, chore-based allowances can highlight how work has monetary value. Besides earning the allowance, teaching them how to spend and save it will also be important. A good move would be to suggest that children save a third of their allowance while spending the money on what they want.

Allow Them To Do Some Chores

Once they reach a certain age, you should consider assigning them tasks and chores. Doing them can be very effective at giving them an idea of what they should be doing. It can be surprising what tasks you can give young children. For example, having them help with the laundry can get them started slowly. You’ll be there to supervise them, and it will make the work a lot easier.

Eventually, you can ease them into more complex chores and independent activities to give them more freedom. Talk to them about the consequences of them doing their chores and skipping out on them so that they can better understand what is involved.

Start A Routine

The problem with being responsible is that it can be a bit of a burden. Your children will have to face that issue so you should show them some ways to handle it. One of the better ways is to start a routine. This can greatly help children who find it difficult to do their chores or something similar. It also makes it less of a problem when they become used to the responsibilities you gave them. This use of routine can then be used later by them to handle their homework or their job.

Let Them Solve Their Problems

An essential part of taking responsibility is doing things independently. Your children won’t fully learn the lessons of responsibility if you are always looking over their shoulders. If you want them to be truly independent and responsible, you should give them a chance to do things on their own. Only step in to help when they ask for it or cannot do it on their own.

Be Responsible Yourself

Children are very impressionable. If you want them to be responsible, then they will take their cues from their parent. If they see you shirking responsibility or shifting the blame to someone else, they will think it is the right thing. Explain to them what you are doing and why it is important. For example, when they ask you why you have to go to work, then explain it as your responsibility. Use this, too, when they ask you about why you are doing chores. This clearly shows to them that you are doing your best to keep to your responsibilities.

Learning responsibility is essential for children. A lot of the problems people have when they grow up happen because they don’t take responsibility for their jobs or duties. The strategies above can go a long way in helping children realize the importance of this. With the small lessons they learn in childhood, they can become better adults with a bright future.
