How to Balance Wellness and Productivity While Working From Home

In this day and age, more and more employees are working from home. Many people like it because they get to work in a more comfortable environment, wear their pajamas, and listen to music while working. While it is an exciting and convenient way to work, it’s easy to slide off from productivity as well.

In the office, everybody is bound to do their respective jobs, having minor distractions. Meanwhile, there can be far too many unavoidable distractions at home, especially if you’re not living alone. Another factor that makes people less productive at home is not having an office-like environment. With a home office, some part of you still knows you’re in the workplace even though you’re in the comfort of your own home.

Whether you’ve just started to work from home or have been doing it for a while, here are some effective ways to increase your productivity.

Creating a Designated Work Area

Look for an area in your home that will be the designated place to do your work, where you know you have the least distractions. The best place could be in a corner and away from doors and pathways that most people pass by.

If you’re lucky enough to have a garage, you can get that space. There’s always a way to make a place more livable. You can even turn your closet into a workspace. You don’t have to get rid of everything there; just make enough space for your desk. This can also be your chance to declutter and get rid of the clothes and other things you no longer use.

You can set up your workspace in an area where there is more natural light. You can look into services providing residential and commercial window solutions to have bigger windows installed in your house. Studies say having more natural light improves productivity, health, and wellness.

Waking Up at the Same Time You’d Do When Working On-site

Productivity doesn’t have to be always about work. It can also mean getting a little exercise or preparing yourself a healthy breakfast before you get to work. When you wake up at the same time you will do going to an office, you can make more time to do things you have to do around the house and take care of it.

Some people feel more like in the actual workplace when they get dressed in their work clothes. It puts them in a working, productive mood.

If another day comes and you don’t have any errands to run, you can start to work right away and get a lot done before lunch. Maybe you can finish early and have a relaxing time, or do more work if you’re too motivated. Once you make this a habit, it’ll get easier and easier.

Setting Boundaries

It’s essential to balance out your personal and professional life. This can be easy to forget when you’re working from home. Be more mindful of the time you spend working. Many people tend to work too much at home since they don’t have to leave the office. However, some may do the opposite and have too many breaks. You can set alarms to remind you when it’s time to stop and start working. Working too much is an unhealthy lifestyle.

If you live with other people, it’s okay to let them know not to distract you during your work hours. Tell them ahead of time not to rush in at a particular time during a meeting. You can set some ground rules with your roommates or your partner. If you don’t have kids, have empathy for those parents who do.

Taking Breaks and Moving Around

What can be bad about having a job on a desk is that you don’t move around much. It encourages a sedentary lifestyle, which is actually unhealthy for one’s health. So be sure to make time for exercise. Take breaks every two to three hours when working and stretch for a little or take a walk. Being physically active and staying away from the screen for a little while helps improve productivity as well.

As long as you’re timing your breaks, you’ll be able to get back to work and restore your brain, feeling more refreshed and motivated.

Final Thoughts

When you work from home, you don’t have to bother with commutes and long walks anymore. As previously mentioned, it’s imperative to move your body and have exercise every once in a while. If you can, do it every day.

Be sure to have time for healthy meals and social life. Check up on your friends and family to make yourself feel less lonely. Having coffee, lunch, and dinner breaks with good people makes you feel more inspired and motivated once you get back to work.
